Angels Among Us: A Husband's Tribute to Compassionate Cancer Care

For more than three years, Dan Lakin and his beloved wife, Rosemary, walked a difficult road together as she battled cancer. Their journey was made a little lighter by the extraordinary caregivers at Mercy.
"From the moment we walked through those doors, we were met with kindness," Dan recalled. "The staff-everyone from the receptionists to the oncologists, nurses and infusion specialists-became our family. They didn't just care for Rosemary; they cared for us."
Rosemary's caregivers made a profound impact on the couple. So much so, that when Rosemary's battle came to an end, two members of her care team attended her memorial service, sharing in the family's grief and celebrating the life of a woman they had come to love.
In gratitude for the care and compassion that carried them through their most difficult days, Dan chose to honor Rosemary's memory by making a generous gift Mercy Cancer Center. A plaque outside the chapel serves as a lasting tribute to Rosemary's strength and resilience, and gratitude for the caregivers who were by her side, every step of the way.
"There were so many times my wife would talk on the way home about how amazing, professional and caring individuals somehow all come together to make such a difference. I mentioned them in my wife's eulogy and called them all angels whose wings are hidden under their uniforms," Dan said. "I hope that when they see her name [on the plaque], they will smile and remember what a beautiful and determined warrior she was. And I hope they know how much their kindness meant-not just to us, but to every family who walks through these doors seeking hope."
Every day, Mercy caregivers bring comfort, dignity and hope to those we serve. Their work is enhanced by the generosity of donors like Mr. Lakin, whose gifts ensure that compassionate, life-changing care is accessible to more people.
You, too, can make a difference. Consider honoring a loved one by supporting Mercy's healing ministry in your community. Together, we can bring hope to those who need it most.
